Hamper present ideas for under $20

Buying a ready made hamper can prove a very expensive exercise, but it doesn't have to be. Getting some cheap cellophane and a piece of cardboard or a  cardboard box   (depending on the contents.) Recover it  in scrap material, wrapping paper or painting it a bright colour will do the trick.

In terms of contents, make sure you utilise $2 shops and also consider buying travel sized products rather than full size to make your hamper more varied.

The good thing about making hampers is that you can usually buy a few items and spread them across several hampers or use the rest for yourself.  Instead of trying to cram in bulky items that come in a packet, considering taking them out and arranging  in the hamper instead. For example, a small packet of nappies could be taken out and individual nappies placed around some shampoos or towels to make it more visually appealing, or buy a whole tin of coffee but put them in smaller jars with ribbons to jazz them up. You don't have to put in every item listed in these suggestions, just add what you like from the list until you reach your budget limit. Also considering making your own things to go in. Search recipes for  foods,  home made beauty products or crafty items.

Here are some ideas to get you started but feel free to let your creativity flow!

Freebies are everywhere! Just open your eyes and be organised at a moments notice.

Today we had an amazing day as far as scoring freebies.

I was notified that I had won two competitions. I recieved a gift voucher from Mitre 10 for voting on the Channel 9 series the block, and I also won $150 worth of Katy Perry eyelashes from a 25 words or less competition i entered. Loving that! It makes entering all those competitions worthwhile.

After reading my email notifying me of my win, I decided to scroll the freebies page of gumtree.com.au to see what I could get, do up and potentially resell for a profit in my local area.

I came across some gorgeous wardrobes that  were a give away and basically brand new. We called the guy who advertised them and he told us he had two houses worth of stuff he needed to get rid off as he was demolishing the property the next day and to bring a trailer.

Well, this was music to our ears and so we grabbed a hire trailer and took off to the house hoping no one would get the good stuff before us. They didnt!

We came home with
  • Three brand new wardrobes( we have NO storage in our house so these were a great find for us)
  • Three double beds with mattresses ( now we finally have a spare bed for couple friends)
  • A solid wood bedside table
  • Several matching solid wood side tables
  • Small solid wood dining table
  • Shoe rack ( our current one just keeps falling apart and all the shoes get knocked off. VERY annoying)
  • Two  chairs
Now if I am not mistaken that is a serious score considering it realistically cost us a quarter tank of petrol and a $50 trailer hire! The only downside is that I probably wont sell much of it because it all matches beautifully and the wood colour fits in to the beach theme we want to do for the house, it will all more than likely stay.

I am stoked about the wardrobes in particular though because we have needed some for so long for my son's room and for a towel cupboard. These are even the same design I was wanting, talk about manifesting things into reality. I really need to get on to my vision board soon!

So if there are things you need, don't rush out and spend the money if you don't urgently need them. Be patient make sure you keep your eye out for competitions that have them as prizes, websites that are selling them heavily discounted or if you find someone giving them away, be ready to drop everything at a moments notice to get them. It will be worth it!

Happy Bargain Hunting!!

My Bucket List ( because apparently I don't have enough goals already!!)

Ok so I know just about everybody does a bucket list. It is usually full of places you want to travel to but I wanted to add a few things in that were a little different.

Of course I have added some travel things in and if i reach my millionaire goal, well its definitely going to be possible but I also want some other experiences and create some memories with others including my kids. I want them to look at me when I'm old and grey and say " I want to live my life like you did." or in my obituary ( morbid i know) "she lived life to the fullest."

This is what I am starting out with because I still obviously have my lists of 30 a year until 30 but I will be adding to this over time.
  1. See Beyonce in Concert
  2. Go to an Ellen DeGeneres Show
  3. Meet Oprah Winfrey
  4. Travel to Borneo to work with the orphaned orangutans
  5. Go to a Superbowl in the US
  6. Kiss on top of the Eiffel Tower
  7. Visit the Colosseum in Italy
  8. Be successful enough to earn a decent income from home
  9. Write a book/e book
  10. Own a golden retriever
  11. Give a senior/death row rescue dog a home ( or a few depending on the size of my property)
  12. Have a house with a beach view
  13. Have Multiple Investment Properties
  14. Completely renovate a house for profit
  15. Be a foster parent
  16. Travel around Australia in a van with our kids
  17. Do a Canada/Alaska Cruise
  18. Take my kids to Disneyland and Universal Studios
  19. Go to Niagra Falls
  20. Overcome my fear of horses
  21. Take a trapeze class or a scarf hanging thing class ( like Pink does in her shows)
  22. Enter a karaoke competition (eeek!)

  27. Learn to live simply
  28. Mosaic something huge like a driveway in our dream home
  29. Build our own house
  30. Create a bali garden

What I have learned about entering competitions

What I have learned about entering competitions
I’ve had a bit of luck in the competition circle. Only little wins but wins all the same.
In the last month I have won:
  • 2 Gold section tickets to Pink
  • 2 tickets to the movie premier of The Intern
  • $50 Petrol voucher
  • A book
  • Skincare pack
One of these was a facebook competition with just the simple “liking” of the page, but the rest were 25 words or less competitions so  I thought I’d sharemy top three tips as to why I’m doing ok
  1. Be creative: I think it’s really important to point out that when you write your submissions for 25 words or less you should actually think about what you are writing. I always use the name of the product up for grabs and the name of the company running the competition in answering the question. If you can make it catchy or rhyme, even better.
  2.  Keep entering: The other way to be successful at winning something is to enter a lot of things. I mean A LOT. While I have won a few things in the last month I have probably entered no less the 400 competitions. Sounds time consuming but there are sites that list of the current competitions in one place. You can then click through the ones you like and it will tick them off as entered.
  3.  Read the fine print: It is really important you read the terms and conditions. One thing I have learned is it is easy to be disqualified from the terms and conditions without realising. Lots of competitions have rules such as only one entry per person but yet for some reason you can fill out the form multiple times, therefor actually disqualifying you instead of giving you extra chances.

Dear Me- Advice I wish i could give my teenage self

Hindsight is an amazing thing.
It is also very annoying.

As teenagers we thing we run the world , know everything and are invincible. If only I still felt like that. Now my life runs in a way where I am indecisive, I worry about everything , have a crapload of responsiblity and I care way too much about what other people think.

I saw some teenagers down the beach recently while I was walking my dog. As I went past I heard this young girl whinging about how her parents wouldn’t buy her the latest iphone 5. They were “just so unfair “ and how she wanted to just move out with her boyfriend.  She couldn’t have been more than fourteen or fifteen years old.

It got me thinking about my own good and bad experiences as a teenager  and what I had learned over my lifetime. It prompted me to write this letter to my teenage self, passing on some advice I wish I had known back then.

Dear Me,

Yes you. The one who knows everything. Who eats whatever she likes and still fits in to those tiny clothes from Supre. Let me tell you something, if you think life is going to be one big party forever you are sadly mistaken.

1. It’s time to knuckle down and make some decisions.  You still haven’t bothered to go for your license yet, when are you going to get around to that? You won’t always want to live in a small town forever, where you just walk from place to place. You are going to need a car to get a decent job. Now get on with it, times a wasting.

2. Stop blowing all your money on cigarettes and alcohol. That stuff is just no good for you. Once you get to my age you will kick yourself for the premature wrinkles that are showing up. Swap it for some H2o and some fresh air and do some real exercise, increase your muscle tone and bone strength. Cruising from house party to house party is not cardio.

3. Don’t be afraid to increase your network, become passionate about something. Your small town friends will still be here in a few years time. Don’t you go eyeing off that bad boy with those tattoos either, nothing good will come of hooking up with him. Find yourself a nice guy, they exist I promise. A nice guy will never make you feel insecure, cheat on you or throw a punch at anyone who looks at you. That’s not called protective, it’s called mentally disturbed.

4. Don’t get any credit cards or loans. Those things are like a moth to a flame. It looks all bright and sparkly from a distance, but once you get too close and commit, you are going to burn.

5. Get a job you love. I know you don’t love your checkout chick gig. You are good at it I must admit, but you don’t actually like it. Stop wasting your life and find something you love doing, even if it means going back to study it to get there.

6. Start putting money away for a house deposit now. There is not as much time later as you think. One day you will want to have children and be a stay at home mum. Paying off a mortgage sooner rather than later is a much smarter thing to do.

7. Be compassionate towards other people. I know that you have had some seriously tough times in your life. I promise you will have more, but someone else will always be doing it tougher. Keep your eyes open and be prepared to help another  in need.

8. Take lots of photos. Take them of everything and everyone and store them in a safe place. You won’t believe how much you will enjoy them later. Also at your age, it is just one of those unfortunate things, that several of your friends will already be dead before you hit your twenties, make sure you  have photos to remember them.

9. Don’t ever be cruel to the nerd. Don’t stand back and stay quiet while other’s are mean to the nerd either. They deserve kindness and respect just as much as you. And you know what? one day, they could be your boss and you will be glad you stood for something right.

10. Read lots of books. Expand your vocabulary and your mind. Lots of people write in order to teach others how to overcome mistakes they themselves made. You might learn something life-changing.

11. Put more time into training your dog. He is so smart but so bored and is desperate for you to teach him something. Stop pressing the snooze button and get up and make him learn.  He would be perfect for movies if only you put the time into him.

12. Tell your mum and dad you love them more often. I realise that they are being impossible right now and I still don’t believe they made all the right decisions, but one day they will be there for you in ways you never thought they would. Especially mum, she is much more sensitive and harder on herself than you know. She will also one day, become one of your closest friends.  Treasure her.

13. Handbags and shoes are not as vital to your survival as you think they are. Do some sums on how much money you would save a year not buying those designer money pits. You could travel. See the world.  Please do that, you will wish you had later when you don’t have the time or money.

14. Fuel your body with healthy organic foods and make sure you get enough regular sleep. You will witness some very ill people in your time and you don’t want to feel as I do, the person who abused their body for so long unharmed while another suffered in agony for no real reason except that it’s just unfair. When you eat food like this you will feel amazing in a way that your party lifestyle does not even compare to.

15. Don’t collect things that are not either valuable or sentimental. These things will drag you down physically and emotionally and make you need a bigger home than you actually do. Letting go can be extremely therapeutic.

16.Enter as many competitions as you can. If you want to go on a reality show like the amazing race, just do it. You won’t want to leave your kids once you have them even though you are just dying for some sort of adventure that doesn’t require packing a suitcase for something the size of a teddy.

17. Take care of your back. You only have one and to live with pain is no fun. Stretch, strengthen your core and practice good posture. You can thank me for this later.

18. Have kids earlier. You will want lots of them trust me, they are so much fun. Just don’t wait too long. Start early so you can still have the energy to keep up with the youngest of them. Make sure you have them all with a man who treats you well and has the same values as you. When you pick him, make sure he’s the one for the rest of your life. It will be worth it if you pick right.

19.AND LASTLY..Enjoy where your boobs sit right now. They will never look like that again.

PANIC STATIONS- revising my options

I have to come to the concerning realisation that the other mummy blogger who has been my inspiration to document my journey, has only just started this goal after  many many years of blogging and experience in running a business, writing a book and "Just" a few other things!

This lead me to a moment or two of completely freaking out and thinking maybe I have become a little  over enthusiastic of my goal and need to allow a bit more flexibility.....

I am still of course going to strive towards towards my original goals but, like any good plan, it should be followed up with a BACK UP PLAN.

So here are revised goals:

GOAL 1: Get out of bad debt.  In short, bad debt is any debt that will not assist you in wealth  creation long term. Things like loans on items that depreciate over time such as cars, holiday or debt consolidation and credit cards. As of today we are sitting on $49,400 of bad debt from consolidating all our loans and finances together a few months ago.

GOAL 2: To become a millionaire by thirty (October 2016) Now there are probably some entrepreneur  types out there that think this is completely achievable. I am though,  beginning to have some self-doubt. I know this was on my list of thirty a year to thirty, not to doubt myself, but the more I research it the less likely it seems possible. If I was already earning a full time wage with no bad debt, had an established business and with a financial management background, I would absolutely believe I was in with a good chance. Coming to realise that the person who I was inspired by, has made this goal after being successful in other ways previously, had splashed a bit of water on my fire.

GOAL 3 (THE BACK UP PLAN): I have made the decision that Goal One is non negotiable. I do not want to be paying the bank for a full five years, potentially losing thousands of dollars in interest. Nor do I want to begin my thirties with any bad debt. Thirty will be a fresh start for us, if nothing else. So, if I only reach Goal 1 or a bit more by thirty i will then set a five year plan to be a millionaire by thirty five. This is still more than most people could hope to achieve in their lifetime so I hope no one reading this has become disappointed! Just remember that we realistically live on a single income and essentially will be eliminating $50,000 worth of debt without me going back to any sort of "real" job.

WHAT I AM DOING RIGHT NOW TOWARDS MY GOALS

  (MONTH 1: July 2013)

I contacted our bank to get an idea of what it will take to get out of the debt within years.(Just before my 30th birthday.) We have to achieve a minimum monthly goal of  $501 a month, paid as an extra repayment on  top of our automatic minimum payment ($1,043)  to achieve being bad debt free by  the time I turn thirty. Anything extra is of course a bonus to get us out earlier.

Any support, subscriptions, shares and suggestions are greatly appreciated. I hope I can help inspire other people in a similar position to start taking control of their lives too!

I will edit this post at the end of the month to let you all now how far we got with raising the extra money to meet out goals!

10 things to help our kids cope financially -while still keeping them grounded

Before we decided to get pregnant my partner and I would talk in length about how we would raise our children and what we expected out of being parents. It was incredibly important to us that we didn’t raise “brats.”

We had seen so many people shower their children in presents, money, expensive technology and junk food only to have an expectation from the child for that was to be the norm and who were essentially, ungrateful.

Our lives were  fairly intense as far as responsibility went for our generation (GEN Y). I was helping around the house cooking and cleaning as part of my contributions from aged seven and  earned my allowance of  $20 for cleaning our larger than average house from top to bottom each week.  I was also responsible for taking care of my menagerie of animals.

My partner's childhood responsibilities were even tougher. He was working on his parents mango farm earning $10 a season for picking and also was going out hunting  to get dog meat from five years old. He used a  308 rifle to make his first kill at age thirteen.

As you can imagine we don't want it quite this extreme for our own children. We want them to still very much be kids. So we discussed our feelings in length and came up with this list to strike our desired balance.

  • Each time our children want something new, they must find two things in their collection that they are willing to part with to charity
  • Each month, help them choose what charity they wish to donate a percentage of their allowance to
  •  Give them a piggy bank for spending money and bank account for saving money early on.
  • Involve them in cooking early  and have responsibility for age appropriate household chores.
  •  Teach them to budget, compare pricing and negotiate the final cost.
  •  Encourage any entrepreneurial inspiration
  • Match whatever contribution they make towards a savings goal up to a certain amount.
  •  The opportunity to live at home as long as they need to, in order to save for their first home.  We will charge them board but put away a percentage into an account to  give them later to put towards their deposit. ( they will not be aware of this until it come time to purchase a house so that their motivation is theirs alone.)
  • Provide them with experiences such as extra curricular activities and travel to expand their awareness of opportunities and to expose them to people in harder times than themselves
  • Fill their lives with positive role models and share stories of the "underdogs" of personal and financial success.
